LET'S LIVE IN... SHREWSBURY

Hero Image

Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire is a historic and picturesque market town with a strong sense of heritage.

Famed for, among many other things, a very long street of shops, a famous cake and being the birthplace of Charles Darwin, you'll fall in love with winding medieval streets, stunning architecture, the scenic waterfront and an abundance of culture.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

With a cultural continuity possibly going back as far as the 8th century it's fair to say that Shrewsbury packs a serious history punch. There are nearly 800 listed buildings including Shrewsbury Castle and Shrewsbury Abbey as well as several timber framed buildings dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.

One such building can be found on Wyle Cop which is where Henry Tudor stayed on his way to victory at the Battle of Bosworth.

CULTURE VULTURES

We've already mentioned Shrewsbury's strong connection with Charles Darwin and indeed Mount House is where the renowned British naturalist and father of evolutionary theory was born. There's also a magnificent statue of Darwin in front of the Grade II listed library building. Shrewsbury has a vibrant cultural scene, with theatres, galleries, and museums. The Theatre Severn is a modern performing arts venue that hosts a variety of events, including concerts and plays.

TIME FOR FUN

Shrewsbury hosts an eclectic mix of events and festivals that captivate both locals and visitors. The renowned Shrewsbury Flower Show is an annual floral extravaganza that enchants with its stunning displays of blooms and horticultural marvels.

For those with a passion for music, the Shrewsbury Folk Festival is a toe-tapping celebration of folk traditions, drawing musicians and folk enthusiasts from all corners of the country. It's a harmonious gathering where melodies fill the air, bringing together a sense of community and camaraderie. Shrewsbury's events and festivals are testament to its welcoming spirit, ensuring everyone feels at home in this delightful town.

TIME TO SHOP

Fun fact:
Wyle Cop is reputed to be the longest row of uninterrupted independent businesses in the UK and is a beautiful place to shop with 39 of Shrewsbury’s almost 800 listed buildings.

Meanwhile, the rest of the town centre is home to a mix of independent shops, boutiques, and larger retail stores.

The historic market, held on various days throughout the week, is a popular spot for purchasing fresh produce, crafts, and more.
